Solving the Problem
The problem that I identified was a lack of parking in the UF campus and surrounding area, causing people to have to potentially spend significant time searching for a spot or parking far away from their destination.
The solution I have come up with is a crowdsourced app that identifies open parking spaces and where they are. The app would collect data from its users in a method similar to traffic apps like Waze. Users would report when they leave a spot or report where open spots are. Once the app becomes more widely utilized, it may be possible to collect data without the user having to manually do it via motion sensors in the phone, similar to the way apple maps is able to detect where traffic jams are. There are obviously many things to refine with this idea but that is the current place I am at with it.
Hi Francis!
ReplyDeleteI am very interested in your problem and I think that the idea you propose in this post is intriguing. I think this could help people find open parking spots and that is a good thing. However, I don't believe that this is a complete solution to what you described as "a lack of parking in the UF campus and surrounding area." There might be open parking spaces on "Frat Row" but if I need a parking spot at Little Hall, my problem still exists.
This could definitely help, though it may be a smaller fix than originally anticipated.
You've got this, great thinking!

Hey Francis
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great problem to find a solution to, I and many people I know have this issue. Many times they have to risk getting a ticket to get to class on time. I think this app would save a lot of time that would be used searching for a spot. I do agree with Carson that it does not specifically solve the overall parking space issue. I do believe this would be widely used by UF students.

Hi Francis, I hope that a crowdsourcing app is the solution to all of our problems! Most people agree the parking in Gainesville is ridiculous and something like this would make it easier. The only issue I foresee is the possibility of a lack of profit. For example, will students have to pay for the app? How much will they have to pay to be able to use it? I think you're on a great start and I hope you find success with it!
